The Importance of MBAs for Educational Administrators

John Heintz is a respected presence in the Chicago educational community and the former assistant superintendent for human resources at Niles Township High School District 219. He serves as founder of Chicago-based Second Rail, which brings together thought leaders from a diverse range of nonprofit and for-profit organizations in enabling educational transformation. In an article on the Second Rail site, John Heintz explores the importance of school leaders obtaining MBA degrees.

With public school leadership is traditionally sourced from within the public school system, there exists a major public-private divide that impacts the ability of administrators to make optimal decisions. Having cross-industry experts in educational leadership positions is critical, as they serve as bridges between different groups and interests within complex organizations.

Despite some opposition, an increasing number of superintendents have been choosing to earn MBAs over doctoral education degrees. One key advantage of the MBA is that it is not designed around statutory public administration credential rules. Rather, learning in MBAs seeks to improve organizational functioning and bottom line financial viability while taking greatest advantage of high-performing leaders.
